Sure bets vs value bets: what is the difference?

Convat Data · 7 July 2026 · 6 min read

Two terms get thrown around a lot: sure bets and value bets. They sound similar, but they are very different strategies. Understanding the difference changes how you use your sportsbooks.

Sure bets: guaranteed profit today

A sure bet, also called an arbitrage or arb, is a set of bets across different sportsbooks covering every outcome of an event, priced so that the combined bets return a profit no matter who wins. It works because books disagree on prices. When one book's odds on one outcome and another book's odds on the opposite outcome are high enough, backing both locks in a return.

The catch is speed and staking. You must place both sides at the shown odds before they move, and you must stake each side in the right proportion. That maths is the hard part, which is why Convat calculates the exact stake for each outcome and gives you ready booking codes for both legs.

Value bets: an edge over time

A value bet is a single selection priced higher than its true chance of winning. You will not win every one — you might lose more than half — but if the price is consistently better than the real probability, you profit over hundreds of bets. It is the same principle a casino runs on, turned in your favour.

Value betting is a long game. No single bet is guaranteed; the edge shows up across volume. Convat surfaces value bets by comparing prices across books and flagging markets where the implied probability looks soft.

Which should you use?

Sure bets are about certainty right now, at the cost of needing accounts on several books, fast execution and thin margins. Value bets are about a mathematical edge that pays off with patience and discipline. Many people use both: arbs when they appear, value bets as the steady baseline.

What they share

Both depend on shopping prices across multiple sportsbooks — which means both depend on being able to move between books quickly. That is where a bet code converter earns its place: it removes the friction that stops most people from ever comparing prices in the first place.

One honest caveat

No strategy removes risk entirely. Odds move, books limit winning accounts, and mistakes happen under time pressure. Treat betting as entertainment with a budget, and use the tools that keep you in control.
